We all know an elderly or handicapped person. This person may be a neighbor, a teacher, or a family member. At some point, they may no longer be able to take care of themselves and require constant care. This may be because of failing physical or mental health, or a combination of both. Eventually, a tough decision is made to transfer such a person to a nursing home.

A nursing home's purpose is to care for people who require constant medical attention and care. These residents are vulnerable and entrusted to the nursing home's care. Unfortunately, this trust is frequently violated because of abuse and neglect to their residents. Corporate entities trying to make a profit often fail to hire adequate numbers of nursing home staff, or to adequately train, supervise, and monitor their current staff. As a result, bed sores (decubitus ulcers), infections, nursing home falls, dehydration, and malnutrition are just a few of the injuries from which nursing home residents suffer, which can result in death.

Typically, nursing home neglect does not involve one wrong act; instead, a pattern of neglect usually exists. You should be alert to the following warning signs:

Bed sores

A person who is bedridden and cannot move needs to be turned about every two hours to avoid developing bed sores. You might find bed sores on a resident's legs, feet or buttocks.

Malnutrition

Some residents cannot feed themselves properly. Generally, any weight loss of more than ten (10) pounds should concern you. Other symptoms may include not being able to stay awake, multiple urinary tract infections, severe weight loss, and parched lips.

Wandering

Some residents may be forgetful and will walk aimlessly around the facility. A nursing home should monitor these people to make sure they are not a danger to themselves or others.

Abuse

The nursing home must make sure that their facility provides a safe environment. Unexplained bruising, including restraint marks, and sudden firing of a staff member may be an indicator that something unusual is happening.

Some other warning signs to watch for are:

• Torn clothing
• Poor personal hygiene
• Untreated health problems
• Odors of urine or feces
• Nursing Facility's inability to explain elder's condition
• Caregiver's refusal to allow visitors to see elder alone
